How Do You Clean A Sheepskin Rug
Olivia Luz

Products for washing wool clothing are not recommended for cleaning sheepskin rugs.
Gently swish the hide around in the bath allowing the water to loosen any dirt caught in the fibres. The best place to wash your sheepskin rug is in the washing machine. Then use a clean rag dampened with water to remove excess detergent. Immerse your sheepskin in the tub and let it soak.
If the rug is smelling less than fresh generously sprinkle the sheepskin with dry baking soda. Presoak the rug for at least 10 minutes in the shampoo solution to bring hidden stains to the surface. Too much bath time can cause the fibers to mat. Work the entire rug for five minutes.
Make sure the rug is thoroughly brushed while dry to prevent tangles and matting. Sheepskin is one of the most delicate materials you can try to wash. If your machine isn t big enough bring your rug to a laundromat with a larger machine. Once you ve cleaned your rug you will need to let it air dry.

Once the sheepskin has been brushed fill a bath with cold water and add a wool shampoo specifically designed for sheepskin rugs. To prevent this use a clean rag and some sheepskin detergent to wash the rug without putting it all the way in water. You want your sheepskin rug to be in the best possible condition before washing it. Allow the baking soda to remain on the rug for at least two hours overnight is better.
If you want to wash it at home do so by hand in a tub of warm water with an enzyme free laundry cleaner or dish soap. As such it s best professionally cleaned. Step number one is to prepare your rug for cleaning.
