When driven in manual mode the clutch is still operated automatically but the driver controls which gears are selected and when. A dual clutch gearbox uses two clutches controlled by a sophisticated network of electronics and hydraulics so that there is no need for the driver to use a clutch pedal. Most dual clutch transmissions have a manual mode which allows manual shifting via the shift lever or paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

In this simplified diagram you can see how the input shaft is divided in two via a hollow shaft with one running through the other and both controlled by the double clutch switching between them.
