A mix of dish soap and water can be used to clean oil paintings but can damage the painting if done improperly.
An oil painting can be permanently damaged if if you do it improperly affecting both the aesthetic and monetary value of the painting. Dissolve half a teaspoon of sodium carbonate crystals in a teacup of warm water. To clean an oil painting lightly dust the surface of the painting with a clean dry paintbrush to remove any surface dirt and debris. Wipe off any dust by using a clean soft brush.
Do not stretch the canvas. Here is a home ready technique that will get rid of the average accumulation of house dust on your oil paintings. Use long flowing overlapping strokes like we did when dusting the painting. Dampen a cotton ball in the solution and then gently dab and rub the moist not wet cotton ball across the painting.
How to clean a dusty oil painting. Before the 1940s paintings of oil on canvas were frequently covered with a layer of varnish to add sheen and protect the thick layer of paint called the impasto. Do not use paper towel because little pieces will rip off where the paint has texture. Water will change the texture and look of the paint on your canvas.
